A nivel nacional:
The hospital specializes in snakes had a single patient kits
On Thursday afternoon the hospital car that should meet all poisonings poisonous snakes or other animals occurring in Miranda and the Metropolitan Area of Caracas, had only two kits (10 vials) of antivenom serum, an amount almost reaches to attend to a patient.
The emergency could be resolved, since yesterday the Health Ministry (in charge of buying the serum to the Faculty of Pharmacy at the UCV and to equip the hospital) provided another twenty kits, but both experts and practitioners of Service Toxicology hope the situation is not repeated, and warn that this issue is better not to leave anything to chance.
Between Monday and Thursday arrived in five patients car snake bite could be met only because Toxicology Service moved and succeeded in getting enough serum through the National Emergency Network. "On Thursday we ran virtually nothing, with only two kits. I do not know what would happen if two people came that afternoon snakebites. More than ten years of service had not faced such a severe crisis," said a doctor at the center .
Sargeant Luis Contreras, Fire Department Marine INEA (National Institute of Aquatic Spaces), was one of those who contributed to this shortage by providing three kits to the hospital on the Thursday: "I have long been warning about the shortage of serum national level. Sometimes patients have to travel inland to three states to be addressed, "he says. And so one of the last reported patients in Car (Jose Horre, 42 years old) was bitten by a rattlesnake in Clarines, Anzoátegui and came to Caracas because not treated in any hospital in the east.
For these situations do not recur, urges the Government to support the development of serum production plants that are in the country: Technology Park of the University of Zulia, Human Immunization Project at the University of Los Andes and the project Bioreptilia, developing the UCV (through the Institute of Tropical Medicine), University of the East and the Venezuelan Institute for Scientific Research.
Meanwhile Hector Scannone, director of the Research Laboratory of the Faculty of Pharmacy, UCV (the main center that produces antivenom serum), states that in Venezuela there is sufficient serum to meet national demand, and the Ministry of Health takes about 80% of production. "If no antivenom serum in pharmacies in hospitals is because they are forced to buy it. But there is no shortage of serum," he says.
2006. 8219 cases were reported snake bites in the country.
2007. The cases fell to 5859, according to official figures from the Ministry of Health.
2008. Health still has not released figures last year, but according to Luis Contreras was over 13 thousand cases.
